South Korea supports food security in Mozambique

The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) has welcomed South Korea’s US$7.6m worth of contributions to improve food security for communities in northern Mozambique.

The contributions which comprise more than 5,000 metric tonnes of rice, will allow the WFP to deliver food assistance to more than 233,000 people in the Cabo Delgado Province.

The region has been shocked by extended periods of conflict, climate breakdown, and growing funding gaps, the WFP has said.

Throughout 2024 and 2025, Mozambique has been hit by regular cyclones which have disrupted agricultural activities, and displaced 540,000 people in 2024 alone, according to the Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre.

‘This contribution reflects the strong partnership between the Republic of Korea and Mozambique, and our shared commitment to humanitarian values,’ said Bok Won Kang, Ambassador of the Republic of Korea in Mozambique.

‘In the face of conflict and climate shocks, it is essential to act with urgency and compassion,’ he said.
