Tsunami reaches Hawaii after massive earthquake hits Russia’s Far East

A magnitude 8.8 earthquake hit Russia’s eastern coast which triggered waves of up to five metres, sparking evacuation orders in Hawaii, Japan, and across the Pacific on 29th July 2025.

According to Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov on Telegram, ‘a series of earthquakes occurred in the waters near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky,’ he said.

The area near Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky where the earthquake originated from, with the largest tremor reaching a magnitude of 8.8

He added that no significant damage had been found so far.

The quake triggered a series of tsunami waves spreading across the Pacific Ocean, reaching as far as Hawaii and Japan.

A warning bulletin from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center (PTWC) at 3.51pm HST said that the estimated time of arrival of the first tsunami wave to Hawaii was 7.17pm HST.

The bulletin warned that ‘a tsunami has been generated that could cause damage along coastlines of all islands in the State of Hawaii.

‘Urgent action should be taken to protect lives and property,’ it said.

It added that all shores of the islands were at risk no matter the direction they face.

The US Coast Guard also ordered ships out of harbours as tsunami waves approached.

Josh Green, Governor of Hawaii said in a press conference that all flights in and out of Maui had been cancelled.

The situation in Hawaii is not yet considered safe, and authorities have emphasised the need to monitor additional wave activity before declaring the threat over.

Tsunami waves also reached Japan’s coastline, with officials reporting waves of 1.3m.

Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi said in a press conference that people living in Hokkaido prefecture and Wakayma, must go to higher elevation and other safe places as waves reach coastal areas, until the warning is lifted.
